Insulin
and Amylin: Restoring Balance in Glycemic Control
Release
Date: May 2006
Expiration Date: May 2008
TARGET
AUDIENCE
This continuing education activity is designed for certified diabetes
educators, nurses, pharmacists, and other healthcare providers
who treat patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
STATEMENT
OF NEED
Pramlintide, the recently approved analogue of the human hormone
amylin, is the first antihyperglycemic agent for type 1 diabetes
since the introduction of insulin more than 80 years ago. The
users of this activity will learn the importance and benefits
of a multihormonal approach to glycemic control, the criteria
for patient selection, and how to safely initiate therapy in appropriate
patients with type 1 or insulin-requiring type 2 diabetes.
EDUCATIONAL
OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able
to:
- Describe glucoregulatory actions performed by the hormone
amylin that supplement the actions of insulin.
- Describe differences in the effects caused by the loss of
amylin secretion in type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
- Cite safety and efficacy data from clinical trials of the
amylin hormone analogue pramlintide that show its effect on
patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
- Determine which patients are suitable candidates for pramlintide
therapy, proper protocols for initiating therapy in these patients,
and safety issues of which both patients and caregiver should
be aware.
