Clinical Decision Making: Ostomy Pouching Systems

Release Date: February 18, 2005
Expiration Date: June 30, 2008

Target Audience:
This program is designed to meet the educational needs of Nurses.

Program Goal:
The goal of this program is to assist non-specialized clinicians in developing a systematic approach to selecting an appropriate pouching system for their patients with a stoma.

Program Overview:
This program outlines the specific pouching features that should be considered when selecting an appropriate pouching system for the ostomy patient.

Statement of Need:
It is estimated that nearly 450,000 Americans of all ages are currently living with an ostomy, and nearly 120,000 additional individuals face this body-altering surgery each year. Affected persons and their families require competent care and knowledgeable healthcare professionals to help them cope with overwhelming concerns related to serious disease, changes in elimination and potential sexual impairment. Nurses are among those healthcare professionals who need access to current care guidelines, product information and educational information to meet the needs of adult ostomy patients and their families.

Intended Outcome:
Non-specialized clinicians working in a variety of clinical settings will have a working knowledge of specific pouching features that impact pouching system selection.

Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  1. Discuss decision points used to select appropriate pouching systems for the ostomy patient.
  2. Identify indications for the use of convexity in the clinical setting.
  3. Integrate specific pouching system features into pouch selection that will promote self-care to the patient's maximum physical and mental abilities.
