Target
Audience:
National: This course is designed for professionals at all levels
and settings in the healthcare industry. Physicians, Nurses, Radiologists,
and Pharmacists.
Florida: Occupational
Therapists, Laboratory Professionals, Optometrists, Clinical Social
Workers, Mental Health Counselors, Clinical Social Workers, Marriage
and Family Therapists, Physical Therapists, Respiratory Therapists,
Cosmetologists, Barbers, Speech-Language Pathology/Audiologists
and other
non-healthcare related personnel.
Program Goal:
It is the goal of this program to review core data and provide current
information on the public health concern of HIV and AIDS.
Program Overview:
This course reviews detailed information regarding the prevention, transmission,
control, diagnosis, and treatment of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV
infection) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Standard
precautions, care of persons living with AIDS, workplace issues and
legal aspects for health care professionals are also addressed.
Statement of Need:
AIDS is an international healthcare concern. The states of Florida and
Kentucky have mandated that licensed healthcare workers keep up to date
on the transmission, prevention and treatment of this public health
concern.
Intended Outcome:
Healthcare professional knowledge of the prevention, transmission, control,
diagnosis, and treatment of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
Educational
Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants should
be able to:
- Differentiate between HIV infection and AIDS.
- Describe the epidemiology and immunopathogenesis of AIDS.
- Discuss current prevalence and incident trends of HIV/AIDS in women,
children, teenagers, and older adults.
- Discuss current clinical management of HIV/AIDS.
- Identify clinical symptoms of active AIDS.
- Discuss current medications and therapeutic strategies used to treat
HIV/AIDS.
- Describe laboratory tests utilized in the management of HIV/AIDS.
- Identify ways to reduce risk of transmission.
- Define and discuss the appropriate practice of Standard Precautions.
- Identify typical psychosocial consequences experienced by many persons
living with HIV/AIDS.
Principal Faculty:
Mary Kathleen Ebener PhD, RN is employed by AKH Consultant
as the associate administrator of continuing educational programs. In
addition, Dr. Ebener teaches courses related to nursing, healthcare,
and statistical analysis at the University of Phoenix at the Jacksonville,
Florida campus. She also facilitates clinical experiences for undergraduate
nursing students at St. Johns River Community College, Palatka, Florida.
She holds a BSN degree from Illinois Wesleyan University; and her MSN
from Andrews University, MI; and her PhD is from the University of Gainsville.
Jonathan S. Holman, B.S., Pharm D. is a practicing critical care pharmacist
at a regional medical center. He is an adjunct faculty at the University
of Florida. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University
of Colorado and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Medical University
of South Carolina. Dr. Holman is co-owner of AKH Consultant.
Virginia McCarty, RN, CIC, LHRM is a diploma graduate nurse with certification
in infection control and healthcare risk management. She is a member
of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology
(APIC) and Florida Risk Managers Association. Ms. McCarty has an extensive
background in teaching healthcare professionals the pricinples of infection
control, OSHA bloodborne pathogens, hazardous waste management, risk
management, and documentation. She is currently employed by AKH Consultant
as an Educational Consultant.
