Target Audience:
National: This course is designed for professionals at all levels and settings in the healthcare industry.

Florida: This program is approved for Occupational Therapists, Clinical Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, Clinical Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists in Florida. It may be appropriate for these professionals in other states that accept programs approved through state boards of professional regulation or state associations.

Program Goal:
It is the goal of this program to review core data and provide current information on the public health concern of HIV and AIDS.

Program Overview:
This is a 2-hour course designed for home study by healthcare professionals. This course reviews detailed information regarding the prevention, transmission, control, diagnosis and treatment of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV infection) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Standard precautions, care of persons living with AIDS, workplace issues and legal aspects for health care professionals are also discussed.

Statement of Need:
Healthcare professionals are expected to encounter increasing numbers of persons infected with HIV/AIDS, and so it is important to remain current with the disease process and basic clinical management.

Intended Outcome:
Knowledge of the prevention, transmission, control, diagnosis, and treatment of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) for health care professionals.

Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Differentiate between HIV Infections and AIDS.
  2. Describe the epidemiology and immunopathogenesis of AIDS.
  3. Discuss current prevalence and incident trends of HIV/AIDS in women, children, teenagers, and older adults.
  4. Discuss current clinical management of HIV/AIDS.
  5. Identify clinical symptoms of active AIDS.
  6. Discuss current medications and therapeutic strategies used to treat HIV/AIDS.
  7. Describe laboratory tests utilized in the management of HIV/AIDS.
  8. Identify ways to reduce risk of transmission.
  9. Define and discuss the appropriate practice of Standard Precautions.
  10. Identify typical psychosocial consequences experienced by many persons living with HIV/AIDS.

Principal Faculty:
Mary Kathleen Ebener, PhD, RN is employed by AKH Consultant as the associate administrator of continuing educational programs. In addition, Dr. Ebener teaches courses related to nursing, health care and statistical analysis at the University of Phoenix at the Jacksonville, Florida campus. She also facilitates clinical experiences for undergraduate nursing students at St. Johns River Community College, Palatka, Florida. She holds a BSN degree from Illinois Wesleyan University; her MSN is from Andrews University, MI; and her PhD is from the University of Florida at Gainesville.

Jonathan S. Holman, B.S., Pharm.D. is a practicing critical care pharmacist at a regional medical center. He is adjunct faculty at the University of Florida. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Colorado and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Holman is co-owner of AKH Consultant.

Virginia McCarty, RN, CIC, LHRM is a diploma graduate nurse with certification in infection control and healthcare risk management. She is a member of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) and Florida Risk Managers Association. Ms. McCarty has extensive background in teaching healthcare professionals the principles of infection control, OSHA bloodbone pathogens, hazardous waste management, risk management and documentation. She is currently employed by AKH Consultant as an Educational Consultant.

A statement of credit will be issued only upon receipt of a successfully completed post-test (70% or better) and activity evaluation form.

Continuing Pharmaceutical Education: AKH Consultant is approved by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmaceutical education.
