Uncovering
the Need to Sleep:
Case Studies on Management of Restless Legs Syndrome
Release Date: December 7, 2007
Expiration Date: December 6, 2008
Activity
Goal
To raise the awareness of restless legs syndrome and available treatment
options.
Statement
of Need
Primary
restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a chronic, idiopathic, sensory disorder
occurring primarily at rest which is defined as symptoms of spontaneous,
continuous leg movements and associated unpleasant paresthesias, causing
an almost irresistible urge to move the legs. RLS can significantly
disrupt sleep, and, as a result, can lead to daytime fatigue, stress,
and mood disorders. Because of this, RLS can have a significant impact
upon patients enrolled in managed health care plans, and consequently
cause a measurable burden on the American health care system. Additionally,
patients with RLS can suffer from poor work performance and a reduction
in productivity, which can affect worker productivity and lead to increased
costs to employers. There are multiple treatments that can be used to
treat patients with RLS, including non-pharmacologic agents, benzodiazepines,
dopamine agonists, opioids, and gabapentin.
Intended
Audience
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of managed
care physicians, primary care physicians, physician assistants, nurse
practitioners, pharmacists, nurses, certified case managers, human resource
specialists and others involved in the care and management of patients
with restless legs syndrome.
Educational
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, you will be able to:
- Differentiate restless legs syndrome (RLS) and its impact in managed
care and employer groups
- Identify diagnostic and guidelines criteria for RLS: NIH workshop
of the IRLS Study Group and RLS Foundation
- Discuss short- and long-term management strategies to improve productivity,
control co-morbidities and enhance quality of life for persons with
