The Diabetes Dilemma: Combating An American Health Crisis

Release Date: April 12, 2007
Expiration Date: July 11, 2009

Target Audience
This activity is designed for a wide range of practitioners particularly managed health care professionals seeking contemporary information and innovative strategies for appropriate diabetes management.

Activity Overview
Although the incidence of diabetes is intensifying, recent developments have sparked new optimism for treating diabetes patients. Therapeutic and delivery advances easing concerns about initiating insulin therapy and allowing effective glycemic control have given both scientists and health care practitioners new ways at looking at this disease. With the emergence of innovative therapies, the managed care industry must adapt by not only finding cost-effective means for delivering the pharmaceuticals but by also addressing care management, drug utilization review, and patient education.

How can we educate health care providers on the fifth leading cause of death and equip them with tools and information to improve the health of millions? This activity will give you information about emerging therapies and treatment protocols, strategies to encourage therapeutic adherence and improve decision-making through pharmacoeconomic evaluation, and describe best practice models that showcase improved patient outcomes and quality-of-life while reducing overall health care expenditures.

Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Evaluate the benefits and risks of current therapies and treatment protocols for the treatment of patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes in order to develop a roadmap to appropriate care.
  • Analyze the epidemic complexity of diabetes and evaluate the advantages of adequately treating individuals with insulin in order to reach goal and ultimately improve patient outcomes.
  • Return to practice with an innovative approach to treat patients with diabetes through the use of new therapeutic options and delivery devices to encourage adherence.
  • Apply evidence-based best practice strategies and consider pharmacoeconomic data when determining the most effective treatment regimen.
  • Analyze the complexity of co-morbid conditions associated with diabetes and evaluate the importance of adequately diagnosing and treating co-morbidities to improve outcomes and manage costs.
  • Propose contemporary approaches by employers to manage cost, determine value, and encourage healthy, productive employees.
