Controlling Esophageal Disease in Children...Beyond the Acid

Release Date:
December 2007
Expiration Date:
December 31, 2009

Introduction:
The role of acid in various pediatric esophageal disorders has been studied extensively. However, there is a need to understand how factors other than acid may influence esophageal dysfunction. Researchers exploring these factors face several questions: What is the role of nonacid reflux in exacerbating GERD symptoms? If patients don't respond to acid-suppressive therapies, what diagnostic and treatment tools do clinicians have at their disposal? Are pediatric esophageal disorders related to gastrointestinal motility or acid? Are eosinophils in the esophagus a result of acid, allergens, or something else?

Providing insight and answers to these questions are 4 distinguished GERD thought leaders, who will discuss issues in pediatric GERD that go beyond acid reflux. This program will address cutting-edge information and how it fits into clinical practice. By featuring brief lectures and interactive Q&A sessions, this online activity is aimed at enhancing audience involvement as well as providing answers to burning questions on esophageal dysfunction in the pediatric population.

Learning Objectives:

  • Differentiate between motility-related, inflammatory, and acid reflux disorders that contribute to esophageal disease in children
  • Discuss the mechanisms of acid and nonacid reflux in GERD
  • Review recently published literature on the available therapeutic options for both adults and children with GERD
  • Provide an overview of eosinophilic esophagitis in children and its relation to acid reflux-associated and "allergic" inflammation

Target Audience:
This activity is designed for physicians, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, and nurses with a special interest in gastroenterology. This online activity will consist of a slide lecture with audio from a live symposium.
