Lipid Management Today
November 2006, Issue 2

Release Date: November 2006
Last Updated: November 2006
Expiration Date: October 2007
Estimated time to complete this activity: 60 minutes

Target Audience
This program is recommended for nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and physicians who care for patients with hyperlipidemia.

Statement of Need
Despite the publication of many studies that support the recommended therapies for lipid management, many patients in whom therapies are indicated are still not receiving them. This online CME/CE newsletter will focus on the 2006 update of the AHA/ACC Guidelines for Secondary Prevention for Patients With Coronary and Other Vascular Disease, which were endorsed by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. In order to ensure that the most recent relevant data are presented, this issue will also discuss the latest findings of the Treating to New Targets (TNT) study, plus new lipid therapy results presented during the 2006 International Society of Atherosclerosis in Rome, Italy. This program is designed to provide nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and physicians with information they can incorporate into their daily practice.

Educational Objectives

After completing this program, you should be able to:

  • Recognize the latest lipid management goals for LDL-cholesterol
  • Account for the effect of triglycerides >200 mg/dL on the updated AHA/ACC Guidelines
  • Incorporate dietary changes as well as physical activity and weight management to meet treatment goals
  • Encourage the consumption of omega-3 fatty acids for risk reduction
  • Develop personal treatment plans that aggressively lower LDL-cholesterol to the lastest recommended levels
