Advancements in Ventral Hernia Repair
Release Date: March 1, 2008 Expiration Date: March 31, 2010
NEEDS STATEMENT
Hernia repairs are 1 of the most commonly performed surgeries in the world. Ventral hernia is the second most common type of hernia repair after inguinal, with nearly 10% of men and women in the United States estimated to develop a ventral hernia during their lifetimes. The Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons estimates that approximately 90,000 ventral hernia repairs are performed annually in the United States. Ventral hernias contribute to the long-term morbidity of conventional surgery, and until methods of hernia prevention are perfected, repair of these abdominal defects remains an important and common problem for surgeons. Accordingly, the ongoing education of general surgeons on ventral hernia repair is a critical component of a continued effort to improve overall patient care, reduce hospital stays and related costs, and improve overall patient quality of life.
