Description
Community pharmacists often assume their patients can read and
write. When these pharmacists provide written medication and health
information, they can mistakenly assume comprehension on the part
of the patient. In the United States, 90 million adults, nearly
half the adult population, have difficulty performing the basic
reading and numerical tasks essential for functioning in the health
care environment and acting on the health care information they
receive. Community pharmacists have a unique opportunity to detect
and address the significant health literacy problem in our nation.
