Description

Any patient diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and receiving treatment will require a multidisciplinary team approach to ensure that the greatest standard of care is received. Although there are many decisions that are left up to physicians, pharmacists are an indispensable part of the health care team. They can make a huge impact by explaining each medication to the patient, ensuring that the patient is taking medications correctly and compliantly, and aiding in preventing the spread of the infection to others.

Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this activity, the pharmacist should be better able to:

  1. Understand the link between the pathogenesis of the HIV virus and the antiretroviral drug targets.
  2. List the four currently available classes of antiretroviral medications.

  4. Discuss the major side effects associated with each class of antiretroviral medications.
  5. Relate important information such as storage, special dosing populations, food requirements, and drug-drug or drug-food interactions to physicians and patients.
