NCPA
is a leader in educating community pharmacists on how to develop patient
care niches focused on disease management and wellness. This program will
provide participants with 6 modules and a pharmacist tool kit totaling
15 ACPE continuing education contact hours (1.5 CEUs) in pharmacy education.

Program Overview:
Community
pharmacists are in an ideal position to identify patients with respiratory
diseases or help manage patients who have already been diagnosed with
Asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). This Respiratory
Care Certificate Program provides practical information community pharmacists
need on screening and managing patients with respiratory conditions through
reviewing patient prescription records, screening, and counseling patients
on medications, lifestyle issues and device usage.
20.5 million people in the U.S. have been diagnosed with Asthma with 9
million of those diagnoses in children under 18 years of age. Asthma results
in 12.7 million physician office visits and 500,000 hospitalizations as
well as 2 million Asthma related emergency room visits yearly. The cost
to society is 16.1 billion dollars. COPD is the 4th leading cause of death
in the U.S. and although estimates are that 30 million people have COPD,
only 16 million of those have been diagnosed and are undergoing treatment.
5% of all physician visits in the U.S. are related to COPD and 15% of
all hospitalizations are a result of COPD. The direct and indirect costs
to society of COPD are $37.2 billion.
A patient care niche focused on respiratory care can be professionally
rewarding for pharmacists and add significantly to the quality of life
of patients. Learn the ins and outs of establishing a successful niche
focused on respiratory care.

Professional Competencies:
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Define and describe the pathophysiology and prevalance of Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Explain primary goals for management of Asthma
- Develop individualized trigger avoidance plans for patients
- Discuss the role and value of the various pharmacotherapeutic choices to treat Asthma and COPD, including mechanisms of action, dosing, administration, adverse effects and precautions
- Discuss considerations for the management of asthma in special populations
- Describe specific services pharmacists can provide to patients with asthma or COPD
- Review Medicare Medication Therapy Management and the implications for respiratory care reimbursement
- Develop a business plan for a respiratory management program
Accreditation:
The
National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) is approved by the Accreditation
Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as an approved provider of general
pharmacy education and certificate programs. This online home study program
consists of 15 contact hours (1.5 CEUs) of continuing education (CE) credit.
This program is no longer valid after December 18, 2010. This education

To receive continuing education credit you must review the full content
of each module and successfully complete the post-test following each
module. This program contains 6 modules and 6 post-tests. You must receive
a grade of 70% or higher to pass each post-test. Your statement of credit
will be issued electronically and immediately upon successful completion
of each post-test and submission of the evaluation. A Certificate of Achievement
will also be issued electronically immediately upon successful completion
of all post-tests.
