Description
In 2006, the Food and Drug Administration approved 18 new molecular entities, several new biologicals, and numerous new dosage forms. This article provides an overview of 11 of the new entities, highlighting important information about their mechanism of action, pharmacokinetic profile, effectiveness, dosing information, and potential side effects and adverse reactions.

Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this activity, the pharmacist should be better able to:

  1. Highlight new molecular entities and biological agents approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2006.
  2. Explain the mechanism of action, pharmacokinetic profile, and therapeutic efficacy for the new drugs reviewed.
  3. Outline available dosage forms and strengths, dosing schedules, routes of administration, and approved indications of the new agents.
  4. List common drug interactions, contraindications, and precautions associated with routine use.
  5. Identify potential adverse drug reactions, monitoring parameters and important points for patient discussion during counseling sessions.
