Statement of Need

You can make a difference! A recent NCPA study found that nearly three out of every four consumers admit that they don't always take their prescription medications as directed. The economic impact of patient non-adherence has been estimated at nearly $100 billion per year in increased hospitalizations, doctor visits, lab tests, and nursing home admissions. The human toll may be even higher in terms of diseases not treated, decreased quality of life, and preventable deaths. Community pharmacists can play a vital role in assuring that patients take their medications as directed. And patients are ready for this option. The same study found that consumers appeared open to tapping into the unique expertise of their pharmacist to improve medication adherence. This program focuses on how independent pharmacists across the country are tackling this problem and increasing compliance, patient outcomes and profits.

Upon successful completion of this activity, the pharmacist should be better able to:

  1. Discuss the issue of non adherence to medication therapy in the general population.
  2. Describe the impact on non adherence on patient health and on the U.S. health care equation.
  3. Outline effective systems in operation in community pharmacy to increase patient adherence to therapy and improve patient outcomes.
Target Audience
The target audience for this program is pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
