Statement of Need

The future of pharmacy cannot be in the prescription business alone. Opportunities that you may have overlooked in the past may now need to be reevaluated given our current pharmacy climate. Recent advances in the areas of pharmacist immunization and medication therapy management (MTM) have created a better advantage and opened the door for the adoption of pharmacy professional services. However, the onus remains on the community pharmacy owner to embrace these opportunities for business survival.

This educational symposium will analyze recent trends in the community pharmacy marketplace and highlight the continued need for pharmacy business diversification. It will also provide insight from community pharmacy owners who have embraced pharmacy professional services to make their pharmacy grow — even in times of economic distress.

Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this activity, the pharmacist should be better able to:

  1. Outline the current independent pharmacy marketplace and analyze the business ramifications of these trends.
  2. Discuss two opportunities for business diversification to improve patient care and improve a pharmacy's bottom line.
  3. Identify the necessary steps to convert existing pharmacy practices to these pharmacy models.
Target Audience
The target audience for this program is pharmacists.
