Statement of Need
The nation is facing a growing epidemic of diabetes. More than 20 million Americans have diabetes and 1.3 million new cases are diagnosed every year. A diagnosis of type 2 diabetes increases the risk of patients developing many serious complications, including cardiovascular disease, retinopathy, neuropathy and nephropathy. The direct and indirect costs of diabetes in 2002 were calculated at $132 billion, of which 80 percent was related to complications. Despite this growing number of patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes initiation of insulin therapy is often delayed for more than eight years. The community pharmacist is in an ideal position to introduce patients to new products and delivery methods that are available to enhance patient outcomes. Pharmacists have frequent contact with patients and are critical in helping patients with type 2 diabetes manage their disease and accommodate their treatment to lifestyle issues.
