Statement of Need
Every fall, many traditional and nontraditional immunizers, including community pharmacists, offer immunization services against influenza. Thus, it is a good time for pharmacists and pharmacies to evaluate the extent to these services are complementary to their practices, and determine how they should be offered in their pracitce sites in a way that would maximize the benefits.

Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this activity, the pharmacist should be able to:

  1. Describe the importance and benefits of pharmacy-based immunization services.
  2. Identify basic components and requirements necessary to start in-house immunization services.
  3. Explain how pharmacists and pharmacies can obtain reimbursement from Medicare.
  4. Discuss ways to assess customers' need for immunization services.
  5. Identify various ways to market pharmacy-based immunization services.
  6. Formulate clear objectives related to immunization services

Target Audience
The target audience for this activity is pharmacists.

Instructions for Participation
To receive a certificate of completion that indicates your eligibility for continuing education credit, you must:

  • Review the content of the activity.
  • Successfully complete the post-test (70% or higher).
  • You will have two (2) opportunities to successfully complete the activity.

Your statement of credit will be issued immediately upon successful completion of the post-test and submission of the evaluation.

Salisa C. Westrick, BS Pharm, PhD is an assistant profesor of Pharmacy Care Systems at the Harrison School of Pharmacy, Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama, and has authored several publications in the area of pharmacy based immunization.
