Statement of Need
In 2005, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that currently 22.2 million people were diagnosed with asthma in the United States. Asthma cannot be prevented or cured. However, asthma can be controlled. An alarming number of adults and children with asthma continue to be hospitalized, treated in emergency rooms, or require other urgent care for their asthma.

A key component of controlling asthma is a proper medical management plan and avoiding asthma "triggers." A very important part of this process is the education of patients about their condition, how to prevent asthma attacks, how to handle asthma attacks when they occur, how to use medications and monitoring devices correctly, and the importance of medication adherence. Pharmacists play a vital role in the improvement of patient education, management and outcomes.
