Statement of Need
The prevalence of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in adults is thought to be around 4.4% of the adult population, or more than 8 million people. It is now known that these symptoms continue into adulthood for about 60% of children with ADHD. However, few adults are identified or treated for adult ADHD. Without proper treatment, these individuals can experience behavioral, emotional, social, vocational and academic problems. In adulthood, these patients may now present with other health conditions that were not a concern during childhood.

Pharmacists can play a key role in potential identification of undiagnosed and undertreated ADHD, as well as the management of ADHD drug therapy due to their frequent interaction with not only the patient, but other health care providers as well. Pharmacists' level of patient exposure makes the community pharmacist a prime candidate to provide patients with education on adult ADHD and treatment options, ongoing personal and emotional support, and regular monitoring for potential adverse events related to drug therapy. Additionally, pharmacists are in the best position to monitor for drug interactions between ADHD drug therapy and therapy for other health conditions possibly being treated by multiple prescribers.
