Statement of Need
Obesity is a serious and prevalent disorder whose effective management requires ongoing care. In the United States, the lifetime risk of becoming obese is approximately 25 percent, and the rise continues to be a health concern for adults, children, and adolescents. Pharmacists can be an essential resource for obese patients attempting to manage their weight. They should take an active role in monitoring patient medication profiles for medications that may have the potential for weight gain, drug and disease state interactions that could possibly occur with many Food and Drug Administration-approved weight loss medications. They can also provide information and encouragement about proper weight-loss programs.
