Description
Asthma is the leading chronic illness in children. It
is the most common discharge diagnosis in children's hospitals nationwide,
accounting for 1030 percent of all admissions and more than 500,000
admissions every year. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute
(NHLBI) estimates that the total cost of asthma exceeds $12 billion
annually. Pharmacists can play a key role to help improve the overall
health of children with asthma.
Learning
Objectives
Upon successful completion of this activity, the pharmacist should be better able
to:
- Define the four categories of severity of asthma.
- Characterize children with asthma who are at risk for deterioration
or need hospitalizations.
- Explain the role of inhaled corticosteroids in the long-term management
of children with asthma.
- Compare and contrast the medications used for maintenance and rescue
therapy of pediatric asthma in terms of effectiveness.
- Counsel a parent or caregiver of a child with asthma on how to properly
use an inhaler.

A score of 70 percent is required to successfully complete
the CE quiz. You will have two opportunities to achieve a passing score.

Statement of Credit should be printed upon receipt; a duplicate copy
will be available in the participant's online transcript for further

receive credit.
