Program Goal

This program will:

  1. Explain the physiology of calcium metabolism and its relationship to obesity, and therefore prevention and management of diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.
  2. Provide the healthcare professional with practical strategies for weight management counseling/education, including effective strategies for increasing calcium intake.

Learning Objectives

This self-study guide summarizes current knowledge regarding the link between calcium intake and weight management. Upon completion of the self-study guide, health professionals will be able to:

  • Discuss the health risks associated with being overweight;
  • Describe the components of a treatment plan for overweight individuals;
  • Describe the relationship between calcium and weight management;
  • Explain calcium metabolism;
  • Implement effective strategies for increasing calcium intake
