NEEDS STATEMENT
Many cytotoxic and other hazardous agents used in the treatment of cancer patients pose a clear health danger to pharmacists, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare workers engaged in the preparation, administration, and disposal of these agents. Adopting safe-handling practices, including the use of personal protective equipment, engineering controls, and other new systems for safely preparing and administering these agents, can help minimize the risk of exposure to workers involved in drug delivery.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the safety issues involved in the handling of hazardous drugs
  2. Describe the technology available to decrease the risks of handling hazardous drugs
  3. Discuss current guidelines for ensuring the safe handling of hazardous drugs

INTENDED AUDIENCE
This program is intended for health-system pharmacists and nurses engaged in the preparation, administration, and disposal of hazardous drugs.

METHOD OF PARTICIPATION
This CE activity should take approximately 1 hour to complete. The participant should, in order, read the objectives, other introductory material, and online monograph, answer the 10-question multiple-choice online post-test, and complete the evaluation. The evaluation form provides each participant with the opportunity to comment on the quality of the instructional process, the perception of enhanced professional effectiveness, the perception of commercial bias, and his/her views on future educational needs. To receive credit for this activity, follow the post-test instructions. There is no fee associated with this activity. This credit will be valid through March 31, 2005. No credit will be given after this date.
