Clinical Update on the Prevention of Stress Ulcer–Related Gastrointestinal Bleeding

Learning Objectives:
After reading this article, the pharmacist should be able to:

  • Describe the relationship between stress ulcer development and the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding in at-risk patient populations.
  • Discuss alternative dosing strategies for acute gastric acid suppression in patients unable to tolerate oral medication, including suspension and intravenous formulations.
  • Compare and contrast the histamine-2–receptor antagonist and proton pump inhibitor antisecretory classes.
