Educational Objectives
Upon successful
completion of this article, the pharmacist should be able to:
- Identify the
stages of progression of Alzheimer’s disease, and the signs and symptoms
associated with each stage.
- List the patient
assessment tools important in making a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.
- Educate patients
and caregivers regarding nonpharmacolgic treatment options for Alzheimer’s
disease.
- For a patient
with Alzheimer’s disease, design a treatment regimen (medication,
dose, route, frequency, titration schedule) utilizing an AchE-I (acetylcholinesterase
inhibitor).
- Identify other
medications under investigation for Alzheimer’s disease, and the possible
reasons for their efficacy.
