The
National Institute for Pharmacist Care Outcomes (NIPCO) is a leader in
educating community pharmacists how to develop new market niches in disease
management. This program will provide participants with 17 ACPE continuing
education contact hours (1.7 CEUs) in pharmacy education. Upon successful
completion of all modules, a Certificate of Achievement is awarded. This
program can be applied toward the attainment of the Pharmacist Care Diplomate

Overview:
This
course focuses on how pharmacists can help patients understand and manage
the medications prescribed for their cardiovascular conditions specifically,
hypertension, hyperlipidemia, ischemia, and congestive heart failure.
Topics include: anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacotherapy
and clinical management, lifestyle issues, implementation tips, marketing
strategies, illustrative documentation forms, case study applications,
and extensive resource information. Pharmacists will also learn about
tools to monitor, document, and bill for pharmacist care services for
patients with cardiovascular disease. Also provided are a business plan
and return on investment analysis worksheets.
This
program can be applied toward the attainment of the NIPCO Pharmacist Care
Diplomate Credential. This program will provide participants with 17 ACPE
CE contact hours (1.7 CEUs) of continuing pharmaceutical education, and
is available in both live and home study formats.
Professional
Competencies:
- Define and contrast the following cardiovascular diseases: hypertension,
hyperlipidemia, congestive heart failure, and ischemic heart disease
- Discuss the risk of developing these cardiovascular diseases and tools
for measuring these risk factors
- Describe how to establish a program in a community pharmacy to care
for patients with hypertension, a lipid disorder, or other cardiovascular
disease
- Demonstrate how to screen for and assess patients with cardiovascular
conditions using current technology and national scoring criteria
- Relate the state and federal regulations pertaining to community pharmacy-based
whole blood technology testing and screening procedures, e.g., OSHA,
CLIA
- Demonstrate how to document the essential components of a cardiovascular
care plan and billing methods for pharmacist care of patients with cardiovascular
conditions
- Discuss national consensus guidelines, i.e., ATP III, and how they
can be employed in the detection, evaluation, treatment, and monitoring
of patients with hyperlipidemia
- Discuss national consensus treatment guidelines and how they can be
employed in the detection, treatment, and monitoring of patients with
ischemia
- Discuss national consensus treatment guidelines and how they can be
employed in the detection, evaluation, treatment, and monitoring of
patients with congestive heart failure
- Discuss national consensus treatment guidelines, i.e., JNC 7, and
how they can be employed in the detection, evaluation, treatment, and
monitoring of patients with hypertension
- Explain the importance of patient education issues related to cardiovascular
disease and exercise, nutrition, and other lifestyle changes
- Assess the business and economic environment with regard to establishing
a Cardiovascular Care Program
Accreditation:
The
National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) is approved by the Accreditation
Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as an approved provider of general
pharmacy education and certificate programs. This program consists of
six (6) modules and provides up to 17 contact hours (1.7 CEUs) of continuing
pharmacy education credit. This program is no longer valid for credit
after May 31, 2007.
