The Skinny on Fatty Acids: The Efficacy of Omega-3s
Please read through the following information and click continue.

ACPE Universal Program Number: 207-999-05-098-H01
Release Date: October 16, 2005
Expiration Date: October 16, 2008

Description

Epidemiologic and interventional studies have found hypertriglyceridemia to be a risk factor for coronary disease, particularly in patients who have low HDL cholesterol (HDL-c) levels and/or elevated LDL cholesterol (LDL-c) levels. While this dyslipidemia may occur in the absence of other disorders, it is frequently seen in patients who have metabolic syndrome, diabetes, or obesity. Evidence from epidemiologic and clinical secondary prevention trials suggest that the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs), particularly eicosapentaenoic acid, EPA, and docosahexaenoic acid, DHA, may play a significant role in the prevention of coronary heart disease, possibly by influencing serum lipids.

The purpose of this program is to convey this evidence as well as provide information regarding available types and sources of omega-3 fatty acids. These include over the counter plant-and fish oil-based supplements and a newly approved prescription product. It is important that pharmacists are aware of the appropriate treatment options when advising patients with hypertriglyceridemia or those otherwise at risk for coronary heart disease.

Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this activity, the pharmacist should be better able to:

  1. Review the current NCEP guidelines.
  2. Review the impact of various lipid medications on lipoprotein metabolism.
  3. Discuss therapeutic approaches for hypertriglyceridemia treatment.
  4. Describe the role of omega-3 fatty acids in reducing the risk for cardiovascular disease.

Target Audience
Pharmacists
