ACPE Universal Program Number: 207-000-06-084-H01
Release Date: June 14, 2006
Expiration Date: June 14, 2009

Description
Fifty-five percent of all people over the age of 55 have, or are at risk for osteoporosis and the prevalence of osteoporosis is expected to continue to increase with the growth of the elderly population. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), osteoporosis leads to 1.5 million fractures per year with the cost of treatment estimated at $17 billion and rising. Fracture associated with osteoporosis is very prevalent; one in two women and one in four men older than 50 will suffer a vertebral fracture.

According to findings at the annual meeting of the North America Menopause Society (NAMS) in October 2004, many women treated with daily or weekly bisphosphonates do not take their medication regimen as directed. One study indicated that while weekly bisphosphonate treatment lead to greater adherence, it still resulted in a suboptimal dosing regimen. Clearly, compliance continues to be a struggle in this patient population regardless of dosage regimen. Greater education and counseling by pharmacists as the most accessible health care providers across America presents an opportunity to increase patient compliance and potentially enhance therapeutic outcomes in this patient population.

Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this activity, the pharmacist should be better able to:

  1. Describe how current prescription treatment options for patients with osteoporosis are targeting better medication compliance.
  2. Develop a plan for appropriate calcium and vitamin D intake for the prevention or treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis.
  3. Describe the safety and efficacy of various drug therapies for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis.
  4. Determine appropriate drug therapy by using evidence-based medicine.
  5. Outline the physical and economic ramifications of non-compliance in this patient population.
  6. Relate key strategies for enhancing patient compliance with osteoporosis therapy.
