A Continuing Education Monograph for Pharmacists, Nurses, and Dietitians

Target Audience: This continuing education (CE) program is intended for pharmacists, nurses, and dietitians who work with or anticipate working with patients with diabetes requiring insulin.

Goal: To enhance the healthcare professional's knowledge and understanding of the role of insulin, insulin analog, and premixed insulin analog products in the treatment of diabetes.

Educational Objectives: After reading this monograph, the participant should be able to:

  • Describe the impact of diabetes
  • Explain the relationship between insulin and glucose in the body
  • State the different human insulin products, insulin analogs, and premixed insulin analogs
  • Describe two different insulin regimens
  • Describe the practical aspects of mixing, storing, and injecting insulin
  • Discuss the prevention and treatment of hypoglycemia
Pharmacists: The American Association of Diabetes Educators is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This program provides 2.0 contact hours (0.2 CEUs) of continuing education credit. ACPE Universal Program Number 069-999-03-871-H04.
Nurses: This continuing nursing education activity was approved by the American Association of Diabetes Educators, an accredited approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission of Accreditation. This program, 0304-003, is approved for 1.4 contact hours.

Dietitians: American Association of Diabetes Educators (AM001) is a Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Accredited Provider with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) from June 1, 2003 to May 31, 2006. Registered dietitians (RD) and dietetic technicians, registered (DTR) will receive 2 Continuing Professional Education Units (CPEUs) for completion of this program. Continuing Professional Education Provider Accreditation does not constitute endorsement by CDR of a provider, program, or materials.
