Insulin Delivery: What Are the Options?

Target Audience: Pharmacists, nurses, and dietitians who are involved with patient education and counseling

Goal: To address the important role of insulin delivery systems in helping patients meet their individual therapeutic goals

Educational Objectives: Upon completion of this activity participants should be able to:

  • State two requirements for intensive therapy
  • Describe three options for insulin delivery
  • Discuss advantages and disadvantages of insulin pen use
  • Identify two insulin delivery systems in research or development
Pharmacists: The American Association of Diabetes Educators and Novo Nordisk Pharmaceuticals, Inc. are accredited by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE) as providers of continuing pharmaceutical education. This program provides for 1.0 contact hours (0.1 CEUs) of continuing education credit. ACPE Universal Program Number 069-360-03-023-H04.
Registered Nurses: This continuing nursing education activity has been approved for 1.2 contact hours by the American Association of Diabetes Educators, an accredited approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission of Accreditation. Approval number 0203-020.

Dietitians: American Association of Diabetes Educators (AM001) is a Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Accredited Provider with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) from June 1, 2003 to May 31, 2006. Registered dietitians (RD) and dietetic technicians, registered (DTR) will receive 1.0 Continuing Professional Education Unit (CPEU) for completion of this program. Continuing Professional Education Provider Accreditation does not constitute endorsement by CDR of a provider, program, or materials.

The following program is a presentation by Virginia Peragallo-Dittko. Ms. Peragallo-Dittko is the Director of the Diabetes Education Center at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, New York. She has been a diabetes nurse-specialist in a variety of settings since 1979. She was named Diabetes Educator of the Year by the American Association of Diabetes Educators and has been a member of the Editorial Board of The Diabetes Educator journal. Ms. Peragallo-Dittko is the editor of the textbook, A Core Curriculum for Diabetes Education, second edition and Addendum. She serves as Editor-in-Chief of Program Publications for the American Diabetes Association. She has published in the area of diabetes education in books as well as lay and professional journals. She has lectured extensively for both lay and professional audiences and has participated in both radio and television interviews.
