Insulin: New Products, New Strategies

 

This monograph has been designed to enhance the healthcare professional’s knowledge and understanding of new insulin products and diabetes treatment strategies. It is intended for pharmacists, nurses, and dietitians who work with or anticipate working with patients with diabetes who may require insulin. Discussed in the program are the impact of the disease, insulin formulations, insulin analogs, dosing regimens, and available alternatives for insulin administration. The benefits of tight glycemic control and techniques for minimizing problems associated with insulin therapy are identified and described.

Goal
To enhance the healthcare professional's knowledge and understanding of new insulin products and diabetes treatment strategies.

Objectives
After reading this monograph, the participant should be able to do the following:

  • Describe the impact of diabetes on health in the United States.
  • Explain the relationship between insulin and glucose in the body.
  • Distinguish among the different insulin formulations.
  • Describe the basics of insulin-dosing regimens.
  • Describe alternative methods available for insulin administration.
  • Discuss the benefits of tight glycemic control and be able to explain to patients the rationale and methods for maintaining good glycemic control.
  • Identify and describe "troubleshooting" techniques for the patient and caregiver team to use in minimizing problems associated with insulin therapy.
