Insulin Delivery Systems

 

Target Audience
Pharmacists, nurses, and dietitians who are involved with patient education and counseling.

Goal
To understand the choices available to administer insulin.

Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant should be able to do the following:

  • Review key findings of the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) and the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS).
  • State three current options for insulin delivery.
  • Compare traditional vial and syringe insulin administration to other insulin delivery systems.
  • Identify two insulin delivery systems in research and development.

The American Association of Diabetes Educators and Novo Nordisk Pharmaceuticals, Inc. are accredited by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE) as providers of continuing pharmaceutical education. Virginia Peragallo-Dittko, RN, MA, CDE
Virginia Peragallo-Dittko is the Director for the Diabetes Education Center at Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola, NY. She is responsible for coordination of the Diabetes Education Center and for the delivery of group and individual instruction.

Virginia has been a diabetes nurse specialist in a variety of settings since 1979. In 1990 she was named Diabetes Educator of the Year by the American Association of Diabetes Educators. She has been a member of the Editorial Board of The Diabetes Educator journal since 1985 and she is the editor of the textbook, A Core Curriculum for Diabetes Education (2nd edition and Addendum). Virginia has been published in the area of diabetes education in books, lay and professional journals, has lectured extensively for lay and professional audiences, and has participated in radio and television interviews.
