Audience
This activity has been designed to meet the educational
needs of pharmacists and registered nurses involved with the
management of patients with diabetes.
Goal
Statement
Provide pharmacists and nurses with information
on the importance of glycemic control and knowledge of a variety
of methods of insulin delivery so that they may guide patients
with diabetes in selecting the most suitable delivery method.
Educational
Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants
should be able to:
- Describe
the importance of good glycemic control for patients with
diabetes
- Describe
two insulin delivery systems currently in use in the United
States, other than vial and syringe delivery
- Compare
vial and syringe delivery with insulin pens, other devices
for insulin delivery, and continuous subcutaneous insulin
infusion pumps
- Outline
the primary benefits and drawbacks of all delivery systems
- Describe
the characteristics that identify patients who might be
good candidates for insulin delivery by various insulin
delivery systems.
- Describe
potential benefits and drawbacks of implantable insulin
pumps
- List
three future insulin delivery systems or routes of administration
currently under study
