Target
Audience: This activity has been designed to meet
the educational needs of pharmacists, nurses, and dietitians
involved with the management of patients with diabetes.
Goal:
To provide healthcare professionals with a summary
of the development, efficacy and safety of insulin analogs and
premixed insulin analogs and a general guide for the proper
clinical use of these products.
Educational
Objectives: After reading this monograph, the participant
should be able to:
- Explain
the key pharmacokinetic considerations of insulin therapy
that were addressed in the development of insulin analogs.
- Describe
the molecular alterations of insulin analogs.
- State
the major pharmacokinetic differences between human insulin
and insulin analogs.
- Describe
the outcomes of two clinical trials showing safety and efficacy
of analogs and premixed insulin analogs.
- Identify
major considerations when individualizing treatment with insulin
analogs.
