Patient Satisfaction, Adherence, and Tolerance: Choosing the Right Antidepressant

Introduction
Research has shown that in the United States, more than 17 million people experience depression each year and nearly two-thirds do not get the treatment they need. Understanding optimal treatment of this disorder can help alleviate unneccessary suffering.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Analyze factors associated with patient satisfaction with antidepressant treatment, including side effects and response to medication
  • Discuss how improving adherence to treatment plans will reduce symptoms, avoid adverse events, and reduce overutilization of medical resources
  • Review the process for appropriate antidepressant selection and provide techniques for forming a therapeutic alliance with patients

He is also the Director at the Mental Health Clinical Research Center at the State Psychiatric Institute in New York and Senior Scientist at the Lieber Center for Schizophrenia Research at Columbia University.
