OVERVIEW This continuing education activity is based on a seminar that
took place in Indianapolis, Indiana, on August 11, 2004, as part of the American
Association of Diabetes Educators 2004 annual meeting. The purpose of the offering
is to acquaint readers with (1) the findings of the DAWN study about the beliefs
and attitudes of patients with diabetes and their health care providers and (2)
the implications of these data for improving diabetes care. TARGET
AUDIENCE This activity is designed for pharmacists, nurses
and dietitians. EDUCATIONAL
OBJECTIVES After completing this continuing education
activity, the participant should be able to: -
Describe the Diabetes Attitudes, Wishes, and Needs (DAWN) study and its primary
objectives
- Describe
the findings of the DAWN study regarding the perceptions of patients and health
care providers about diabetes care
- Describe
the findings of the DAWN study regarding the role of nurses in diabetes care
- Define
ways to address the psychosocial needs of patients with diabetes
- List
opportunities to support improved educational and psychological services
