Depression
and Anxiety Disorders in Managed Behavioral Health Care:
Bridging the Gaps in Diagnosis, Treatment, and Ongoing Management
Module 4:
A Case Study from the Primary Care Physician Point of View
Release
Date: March 15, 2005
Expiration Date: March 15, 2006
Statement
of Need
At least 60% of patients with mental disorders seek treatment from primary
care physicians, but many physicians don't have the resources or knowledge
to perform effective patient assessments. On the payer side of behavioral
health care, the era of cost-savings is evolving into a new era of accountability
among health plans regarding how patients are identified for treatment,
and how treatment decisions are made. The growing need to find and achieve
ongoing collaboration among payers and providers in behavioral health
settings is an economic necessity that can no longer be ignored.
Multi-Disciplinary
Intended Audience
Medical directors, primary care physicians, physician assistants, nurse
practitioners, pharmacy directors, managed care pharmacists, health
systems pharmacists, nurses, case managers and disease managers.
Learning
Objectives
After completing this continuing education activity, the participant should
be able to:
- Define common barriers to effective treatment and management of depression
- Discuss opportunities to improve patient care among persons with depression
and anxiety
- Identify interventions used in payer and provider settings that impact
outcomes in the area of mental health
