Robert G. Sawyer, MD
Dr. Robert G. Sawyer is a professor in the Department of Surgery and the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Virginia. He is also director of the university’s surgical nutrition service and a member of the University of Virginia Hospital antibiotic subcommittee. He received a bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences and a medical degree from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He served an internship and residency in the Department of Surgery at the University of Virginia Medical Center. He also completed a surgical infectious disease fellowship and surgical critical care residency at the University of Virginia Medical Center and a transplant fellowship at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Sawyer’s basic science research interests include the immunomodulatory effects of prokaryotic DNA-bearing CpG motifs on the innate immune response to infection in animals, and host immunological deficits leading to focal and systemic infections with nosocomial organisms. In clinical science, his research interests include the importance of gender and race to outcome of infection; nosocomial infections in naturally and iatrogenically immunosupressed hosts; and the role of resistant organisms in morbidity and mortality associated with solid organ transplantation, trauma, and critical illness, among others.
He is the author of more than 100 clinical trial articles in peer-reviewed publications, and he serves on the editorial boards of Surgical Infections, BioMed Central, Shock, and the Journal of Long-Term Effects of Medical Implants. He is a reviewer for the Journal of Immunology, the Journal of the American Medical Association, the New England Journal of Medicine, and many other publications. Dr Sawyer is a member of numerous professional organizations, such as Alpha Omega Alpha and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and serves on the committee for development and maintenance of the National Certified Nutrition Support Physician Examination for the American Society for Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition.
